No Mechanical Failure Before NY Plane Crash That Killed 34-Year-Old Pilot, NTSB Finds Federal investigators have ruled out mechanical failure for causing a small plane crash in upstate New York that killed a beloved pilot and photographer. A preliminary report released by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Tuesday, July 2, states that investigators found no evidence of any pre-impact mechanical malfunctions or failures on either of the plane’s engines prior to the June 17 crash near Albany International Airport. 'Adventurous Spirit': Pilot Killed In NY Plane Crash Remembered For 'Palpable Zest For Life' Natalie Gillis saw much of the world in her 34 years, most of it from the air. The pilot from Toronto, Canada died Monday morning, June 17, when her twin engine Piper plane crashed just moments after taking off from Albany International Airport. Gillis, the aircraft’s sole occupant, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Colonie Police. The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the NTSB.
