Six people were rescued from dangerous waters off Long Island Sound in Smithtown, Suffolk County police announced on Sunday, Aug. 10. Marine Bureau officers and the Town of Smithtown Harbormaster responded to two separate incidents — first involving three kayakers, then two swimmers and a jet skier — according to the release. Three adult male kayakers from Central Islip were about a mile north of Nissequogue when a double kayak began taking on water and partially submerged. Search crews have suspended efforts to locate a potentially missing kayaker near Long Island. A boater contacted the US Coast Guard at around 12:40 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, after spotting an unmanned 15-foot kayak near the village Lloyd Harbor. The kayak was found to be carrying live bait, a fishing pole, and a backpack, officials said. A camera was rolling the moment a stranded kayaker finally reached safety after spending over an hour treading water off Long Island. The successful rescue operation happened at around 5:45 p.m. Sunday, June 23, near Reeves Beach, located in the Riverhead hamlet of Baiting Hollow.
