A tow truck burst into flames and fire spread into a Hewlett auto body shop early Monday, June 9, prompting a multi-agency response, Nassau County police announced on Tuesday, June 10.
The fire ignited in front of Avi’s Auto Center at 1205 West Broadway around 2:57 a.m., police said.

A 21-year-old suspect is behind bars weeks after a hit-and-run crash killed a volunteer firefighter on Long Island.
Emergency crews in Hewlett were called about a fatal crash near Broadway and Everit Avenue shortly after 10 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18.
Jeffrey Frank, 74, was crossing Broadway when he was struck by an SUV traveling northbound. Witnesses told Nassau County Police that a male driver exited the vehicle, dragged Frank to the side of the road, and then fled the scene.
