Dangerous Downshifts, Wheel Lockups Force Ford Pickup Probe To Expand Federal safety officials have escalated their investigation into more than 1.2 million Ford pickups after complaints about sudden transmission downshifts more than doubled, officials said. The probe into about 1,270,970 Ford F-150 trucks expanded on Friday, Jan. 30, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. David Gange, of Melville, was driving an Audi northbound on Route 110 shortly after 11 a.m. when he struck the rear of a Freightliner tractor-trailer that was stopped at the intersection of Duryea Road in Melville, Suffolk County Police said.
