The Yankees became only the second team in Major League Baseball history to hit nine home runs in a 20-9 win over the Milwaukee Brewers at Yankee Stadium on Saturday afternoon, March 29. It was the most homers hit in a game in franchise history.
Right fielder Aaron Judge had three home runs, including a grand slam, and a career-high eight runs batted in.
The Bombers started the game with an MLB record three first-pitch home runs off Brewers starter Nestor Cortes, who was traded from the Yankees in the offseason.
Leadoff batter/first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, left fielder Cody Bellinger, and Judge accounted for the homers.
It was the first time in franchise history that the Yankees hit back-to-back-to-back homers to start a game.
The Yanks' seven home runs through the first three innings is an MLB record. One of them was a third-inning grand slam by Judge, the ninth of his career.
The Yankees' first six batters each had at least one homer, and their four homers in the first inning is another franchise record.
Judge had a chance to hit four homers in a game for what would have been the first time in his career, but flew out to left field, batting against position player Jake Bauers, who moved to the mound from first base due to the lopsided score.
The MLB record for most home runs in a game is 10, set by the Toronto Blue Jays in 1987.
In addition to the Yankees, one other team has hit nine homers in a game: the Cincinnati Reds, in 1999. Ironically, Yankees manager Aaron Boone hit two homers for the Reds, including the first of the game.
Other Yankee players to hit homers were shortstop Anthony Volpe, catcher Austin Wells, second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr., and pinch-hitter Oswald Peraza in the seventh inning, which was home run No. 9.
Judge's third home run was a 423-foot blast to center in the fourth, giving the Yanks a 16-4 lead.
After hitting two home runs in a 4-2 win over the Brewers on opening day on Thursday, March 27, the Yankees' 11 homers in the first two games of the season is another MLB record.
The 20 runs was the most the Yankees scored in a game since September 2020.
