Parolee Shot, Killed Man Sleeping In Car In Hempstead, Jury Finds
A Long Island man out on parole shot and killed a man who had been sleeping in a car, a jury found. Kadeem Lewis, age 31, of Hempstead, was found guilty of second-degree murder and related charges in Nassau County Court on Thursday, Oct. 31, in the killing of Jose Sanchez-Velasquez. According to investigators, Lewis and a co-defendant, Richard Ford, were walking around Hempstead looking for a house to burglarize when they spotted Velasquez sleeping in the front seat of his car at around 2:20 a.m. on Nov. 25, 2019. Seen Her? Alert Issued For 14-Year-Old Girl Reported Missing In Hempstead
Authorities are asking for help in locating a missing teenager from Long Island. Ariya Shingler, age 14, was last seen leaving Hempstead High School at around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, according to Nassau County Police. She was reported missing Wednesday afternoon. Shingler is 5-foot-3 and 190 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. She was wearing tan pants, a black sweatshirt, a pink bonnet, and was carrying a black handbag. Trio Sought After Smash-Grab Burglary At Levittown Business
The search is on for three suspects who broke into a Long Island game store and stole merchandise. It happened in Levittown, at the Collectors Emporium on Hempstead Turnpike, at around midnight Tuesday, Oct. 29. Nassau County Police said three people entered the business by breaking a rear door. They then stole an unknown amount of merchandise before fleeing the scene. No suspects had been publicly identified or arrested as of Tuesday evening. Coast Guard Suspends Search For Possible Missing Kayaker On Long Island
Search crews have suspended efforts to locate a potentially missing kayaker near Long Island. A boater contacted the US Coast Guard at around 12:40 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, after spotting an unmanned 15-foot kayak near the village Lloyd Harbor. The kayak was found to be carrying live bait, a fishing pole, and a backpack, officials said. To protect motorists on New York roads, Gov. Kathy Hochul has announced the creation of a new red light camera program in the Hudson Valley and the expansion of other initiatives across the state. In an announcement on Wednesday, Oct. 23, Hochul revealed that she signed legislation to extend several existing red light camera programs in Westchester, Albany, and Nassau counties. Cargo Truck Hits, Kills 44-Year-Old Man In Baldwin
A man died after being struck by a vehicle on Long Island. The incident happened in Baldwin, on Coes Neck Road, at around 6:20 a.m. Friday, Oct. 18. Nassau County Police said a cargo truck was driving near the intersection of Notre Dame Court when it swerved to avoid a car backing into the roadway and struck a 44-year-old man walking on the shoulder. An admitted drug dealer was formally charged in connection with the overdose death of a 17-year-old Long Island girl. Daquan Booker, age 34, of Smithtown, was arraigned on multiple drug charges in Nassau County Court on Tuesday, Oct. 15, following the death of Garden City High School senior Grace Wrightington. Prosecutors said Booker met with the teen on at least two occasions in July 2023 and sold her purported oxycodone pills laced with fentanyl. Hit-Run Driver Sought After 19-Year-Old Critically Injured On Sunrise Highway In Freeport
A month after a 19-year-old man was seriously injured by a hit-and-run driver on a Long Island highway, the suspect is still at large. The incident happened on Sunrise Highway in Freeport at around 11:15 p.m. Sept. 14. Nassau County Police said the victim was crossing Sunrise Highway near the intersection of Bayview Avenue when a dark colored SUV traveling northbound struck him.
