Leaders on Long Island are honoring a late police detective who died from cancer caused by his work at Ground Zero. In Syosset, the corner of Florence and Edward avenues was officially rededicated as Detective Lieutenant Christopher Cizmarik Way on Thursday, Aug. 29. The posthumous honor comes a year after Cizmarik died from pancreatic cancer that was caused by his time spent working at the World Trade Center site in the days following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. A decorated officer who served for nearly 40 years has died of complications from cancer, which he contracted during rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero. Nassau County Chief of Patrol Kevin G. Canavan, age 64, died on Sunday, June 30, according to his colleagues with the department. Canavan died of complications from the 9/11-related cancer. Heather McNamara, who stole hearts across the tristate area after undergoing groundbreaking cancer surgery as a child, has died at the age of 22.
