Did You Get One? Mysterious 'Ghost' Text Messages Confuse Thousands
Thousands of people were left in bewilderment after receiving waves of mysterious text messages dating back months ago. The “ghost messages” were sent to both iPhone and Android users this week, and reportedly were prevalent among all major cellular carriers. In total, approximately 168,000 messages were sent due to an “internal maintenance cycle,” according to CNN. Robocalls continue to be a scourge for New Yorkers, with millions of callers being flooded by calls “at all hours of the day and night.” In April, New Yorkers received 290.3 million robocalls, which is an average of 112 calls per second and 11 calls per New Yorker. Measure To Ban Robocalls Gains Momentum Among State Lawmakers
State lawmakers in New York are taking a stand against robocalls, proposing a bill that would stop automated phone calls from being placed without prior consent. New York Sen. Brad Hoylman and Assemblywoman Yuh-Line Niou, and consumer advocates announced the Robocall Prevention Act in Albany on Tuesday, following a record number of unwanted calls that were made in 2018. Verizon Reports East Coast Texting Outage
Verizon customers were unable to send or receive texts Tuesday. The company -- whose slogan is "America's most reliable network" -- confirmed a texting outage on the East Coast in a tweet. "Our technicians are fully aware we have a ton of customers that are being effected, and we're working non-stop to get this matter resolved as soon as possible," Verizon said. Outages from Boston to Florida were showed on the website Down Detector. The issue was resolved Tuesday morning.

The New York Public Service Commission is extending settlement talks with Charter Communications as the two sides potentially near a deal to keep the company in the state. Last July, the PSC issued an order kicking Charter out of New York, alleging that the company didn’t meet requirements to extends its network to underserved areas in the state. New York Attorney General Barbara Underwood has joined a coalition of elected officials calling on the Federal Communications Commission to create new regulations allowing telephone service providers to block robocalls. Last year, at the urging of a coalition of Attorneys General, the FCC granted phone service providers authority to block certain illegal spoofed robocalls. Now, the coalition of 34 Attorneys General throughout the country are seeking additional authority for the providers to work together to detect and block those illegal spoofed robocalls. A 47-year-old area native who was a telecommunications sales executive for 25 years died unexpectedly earlier this week. Thomas Noto, who was born and raised in Dutchess County, died on Monday, Sept. 10 at Dignity Health-California Hospital Medical Center in Los Angeles. Born March 5, 1971 in Poughkeepsie, he was the son of George Noto Sr. and the late Roseanne Esposito Niet. He was a graduate of Franklin D.
