Sherifullah Hashimi, 62, was found guilty on seven counts in all, mostly felonies, by a Schenectady County jury on Monday, Feb. 3, according to the district attorney’s office. Passenger Dies In Fiery Drunk-Driving Crash Near Capital Region College, Police Say A suspected drunk-driving crash near a college campus in the region claimed the life of a 47-year-old woman. The fiery wreck happened just before 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, in Schenectady, on Eastern Avenue. The scene was two blocks away from Union College. According to Schenectady Police, 31-year-old Gregory Mitchell, of Scotia, was driving while intoxicated when he crashed into a parked car on Eastern Avenue near Degraff Street. Kevin Figueroa, of Schenectady, died from injuries sustained in the wreck that happened around 8 p.m. Thursday, July 21, in the city’s Mont Pleasant neighborhood, according to Schenectady Police. Investigators said Figueroa was riding his motorcycle westbound on Crane Street when he struck an oncoming vehicle that attempted to make a left turn onto Sixth Avenue. Swastika-Drawing Spree In Capital District Lands Man In Jail A man accused of defacing several businesses in the Capital District with hate symbols is now facing criminal charges. Schenectady Police were called at around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 14, with reports that someone had drawn swastikas on the side of St. Joseph’s Church on Lafayette Street During their investigation, officers discovered several more swastikas and other symbols that had been drawn in chalk on numerous businesses in the downtown area, police said.
