Many State Senators Want To Strip Cuomo Of Emergency Powers, Citing Nursing Home Cover-Up
This story has been updated. New York State Senate Republicans, and now, a growing number of Democratic Senators, are seeking a special session in an effort to remove Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s emergency powers in the wake of the report into the underreporting of COVID-19 deaths in nursing homes statewide. Senate Republican Leader Robert Ortt and members of the Republican Conference called on the Senate Majority to convene a special session and strip Cuomo of his emergency powers while calling for a thorough investigation into his administration. They were later joined by 14 Democratic senators. …

NY State Senate Retains Democratic Majority
Though it was a disappointing and long night for some, New York’s Democrats were able to retain control in the State Senate “comfortably.” Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins said that while already retaining their position, the gap between the Democrats and Republicans in New York is expected to grow even further as more votes are counted. As of 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 4, with ballots still being tallied, there are still five seats being determined in the Senate, with the Republicans holding a tenuous hold with one more delegate than the Democrats. “Despite a difficult nigh…

Rockland resident Matthew Weinberg, a Republican, is the latest candidacy to throw his hat into the ring for the New York State Senate District 38 seat that has been held by Democratic Sen. David Carlucci since 2010. Carlucci will be challenging for the retiring Nita Lowey’s seat in New York’s 17th congressional district. In a statement, Weinberg, of Suffern, cited "disunity within his district, depressed property values due to some of the highest property and school taxes in the nation,…

Cuomo Wants To Move NY Presidential Primary From April To 'Prime' February Date, Reports Say
Governor Andrew Cuomo is reportedly pushing to “upend the presidential primary calendar” by having voters head to the polls in February rather than April. If Cuomo makes the decision to veto a bill that would set the presidential primary to Tuesday, April 28, it would occur just a few weeks after the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary, which are considered to be “pivotal.” Cuomo may also approve of moving New York’s legislative primaries for state Senate and Assembly, currently scheduled for June 23, 2020, to coincide with a February presidential primary. However, officials say that …

State Bill Would Teach Students About Hateful Symbols
Middle and high school students in New York may soon be taught the meaning of hateful symbols such as the swastika and noose as part of new legislation that has been introduced by state lawmakers. With reports of hate crimes on the rise statewide, including dozens on Long Island and the Hudson Valley, lawmakers are seeking to improve student education on racist and anti-Semitic symbolism. In Nassau County, there have already been 44 reported incidents, more than double at this point last year. Last week, seven swastikas were found drawn on a pavilion at an Oyster Bay park, and nooses have …

Me-Ouch! New York Becomes First State In Nation To Ban Declawing Cats
New York has officially become the first state in the nation to ban the declawing of cats. Earlier this year, the New York Senate and Assembly voted to approve legislation that would eliminate the declawing of cats, following similar laws in Denver and various towns in California. On Monday, July 22, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed that bill into law, making the Empire State the first to ban the “cruel and painful procedure” that many an owner has forced on their felines. “Declawing is a cruel and painful procedure that can create physical and behavioral problems for helpless animals, an…

State Assembly Grants Four Hudson Valley School Districts Waivers On Millions In Fines
Four Hudson Valley school districts may be spared from paying about $19 million in fines due to late paperwork on construction projects. Ocasio-Cortez Bears Most Blame For Loss Of Amazon HQ2, New Yorkers Say In New Poll
The majority of New Yorkers believe that losing the planned Amazon HQ2 headquarters in Queens is bad for the state and say Westchester high school graduate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is most to blame, according to a brand new Siena College poll. Last year, Amazon announced that it was planning to build two new Amazon HQ2 headquarters, one in Long Island City, and a second in northern Virginia, bringing more than 25,000 jobs to the region. Last month, the retail giant backed out of the deal, despite billions of dollars in state and local incentives. The newly released Siena Poll found that 67 …
