A man from the region may spend the rest of his life behind bars for trying to kill a woman by setting her on fire and seriously burning a second victim. Houston Ketter, age 41, of Albany, was sentenced to 50 years in prison in Albany County Court on Tuesday, Dec. 19, after a jury found him guilty of attempted murder. Colleagues and loved ones are mourning the sudden loss of a police officer from the region being remembered for his commitment to the community. Albany Police Detective Conor O’Shea died Wednesday, Dec. 6, at the age of 37, according to his obituary. A cause of death was not given. Flood watches or warnings are up for the entire Capital Region with rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches expected through Monday night, Dec. 18, according to the National Weather Service in Albany. A former restaurant owner in the region raked in six figures by defrauding a relief program meant to help businesses impacted by COVID-19. Scott Solomon, age 37, of Albany, pleaded guilty to two counts of bank fraud in Albany federal court on Monday, Dec. 11. According to prosecutors, he admitted to applying for and obtaining Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans in 2020 for two Saratoga Springs restaurants that he formerly operated. Police are investigating reports of a stabbing at an elementary school in the region. The man accused of opening fire at a New York synagogue on the first day of Hanukkah has been federally charged. Mufid Fawaz Alkhader, age 28, of Schenectady, appeared in Albany federal court on Friday, Dec. 8, where he was arraigned on one count of unlawfully possessing a firearm.
