Shortly before 11:45 a.m. on Sunday morning, state police troopers from the Poughkeepsie barracks were dispatched to the southbound lanes of the Taconic in Pleasant Valley, north of Route 44, where there was a reported rollover.

According to police, the preliminary investigation has determined that a Subaru Outback, operated by 65-year-old resident of Baldwin in Nassau County on Long Island, Lawrence Rycyk, was being driven in the passing lane of the parkway when the vehicle exited the western side of the roadway, striking a rock embankment before overturning and becoming engulfed in flames.

Police said that Rycyk and his passenger, 64-year-old Ronnie Rycyk, were removed from the burning vehicle by “Good Samaritans” before first responders arrived at the scene.

Upon arrival, members of the Pleasant Valley Fire Department pronounced Ronnie Rycyk dead at the scene, while the driver was transported to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital with life-threatening injuries. His condition was not immediately available on Monday afternoon.

The collision was reconstructed by the New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit and is still under investigation. The cause of the crash has not been released. Keep following Daily Voice for updates.
