Cyclist Who Died In Rhinebeck Trail-Riding Event ID'd

RHINEBECK, N.Y. -- The bicyclist who died in Rhinebeck on Sunday while participating in a trail-riding event has been identified as a 60-year-old Ulster County man.

Dutchess County sheriff's deputies are investigating after a male bicyclist died of an apparent medical emergency at Ferncliff Forest in Rhinebeck on Sunday.

Dutchess County sheriff’s spokesman Capt. John Watterson said that the man, David Steres of Milton, had suffered an unknown medical emergency.

The Ferncliff Fat Bike Fest was going on at Ferncliff Forest off Mount Rutsen Road at the time of the incident, but it could not be confirmed if that was the event Steres was participating in.

Watterson did confirm, however, that Steres was participating in a trail bike event.

Other bicyclists found Steres after he collapsed around 11:30 a.m., Watterson said.

While Steres’ death does not appear to be suspicious, the Dutchess County medical examiner is conducting an autopsy, Watterson said.
