The Garden Conservancy will be hosting its annual open day on Saturday, showcasing gardens in Tivoli and Rhinebeck.
A tea garden at Tivoli will be on display from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m at 14 North Road. Garden designer Bettina Mueller set out to turn her small backyard into a private world of beauty and tranquility, according to the Garden Conservancy.
Bettina's Japanese-inspired tea garden that won Gardenista's 2015 Best Garden Design Award.The garden features a bamboo fence and gate, stone paths, naturalistic planting, and an antique Chinese water basin.. The garden leads to a tea house nestled in the back of the property where Bettina hosts Japanese tea ceremonies for her guests, according to the Garden Conservancy.
Cedar Heights Orchard in Rhinebeck at 8 Crosby Lane. is another garden that will be open Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The gardens near the house, pool house and barn include informal plantings of a variety of bulbs, perennials and shrubs designed for low maintenance and bloom from March to November. Further on the large vegetable garden/cutting garden includes a new border planting to attract butterflies and pollinators.
From there a long path through a meadow leads past several ponds toward a woodland garden of native plants and a stand of bamboo. A one-acre new apple orchard of 240 trees including twenty-four heirloom and new varieties for cider making was planted two years ago. The hillside orchard faces west with a view of the Catskill Mountains, according to the Garden Conservancy.
Amy Goldman Fowler will be showing off her Rhinebeck garden from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fowler grows heirloom fruits and vegetables—two orchards full of apples, pears, peaches; and three plots of squash, melons, tomatoes, peppers, and more on her 1788 farmstead, according to the Garden Conservancy.
