Sergeant Collapses, Dies Moments After Shift In Hudson Valley: 'Good Man Who Will Be Missed' A Hudson Valley police department is mourning the line-of-duty loss of a beloved sergeant who collapsed and died mere moments after completing his shift.  In a statement on Saturday, April 20, the Putnam County Sheriff's Office announced the death of Brewster Police Sergeant Richard Gurniak, who collapsed after hanging up his keys after his shift during the early morning hours on Saturday.  Despite efforts to save his life from a fellow Brewster officer and two members of the Sheriff's Office, Gurniak later died at Putnam Hospital from a heart attack at the age of 57. Firefighter Hit By Car At Scene Of Vehicle Rollover In Hudson Valley: 'Please Slow Down' A firefighter was injured after they were struck by a car while responding to a vehicle rollover in the Hudson Valley.  The incident happened in Putnam County on Wednesday, March 15, when firefighters and Carmel Volunteer Ambulance Corps members responded to a vehicle rollover in Carmel on Stoneleigh Avenue near Putnam Hospital, firefighters announced on Saturday, March 18. According to the Carmel Fire Department, first responders found that the driver had escaped from the rolled-over car themselves. $1 Million Goes To Hospital In Hudson Valley To Help Reopen Birthing Center State-funded grants and community donations totaling $1 million will go to a hospital located in the Hudson Valley to help it reopen its birthing center.  Upgrades to the Putnam Hospital's birthing center are being funded by three major sources, according to Nuvance Health, which owns the hospital in Carmel:  A $500,000 state grant funded by New York's Community Local Community Assistance Program; $250,000 from the Kearney Realty and Development Group from the Northern Westchester town of Somers; $250,000 from the Putnam Community Foundation.
