Newburgh resident Mark Garcia, 26, was sentenced in Orange County Court on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, after pleading guilty to second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler announced.

Prosecutors detailed two separate incidents in which Garcia attempted to evade law enforcement:

  • March 1, 2024: Garcia was a passenger in a vehicle stopped by police in Newburgh. When officers ordered the driver out, Garcia slid into the driver’s seat, sped off, and later abandoned the car before escaping;
  • May 11, 2024: Officers spotted Garcia conducting a suspected drug deal. When they approached, he ran, dropping a loaded firearm and an extra magazine as he fled. He was caught nearby and admitted to purchasing the gun illegally.

Garcia's sentence includes five years in state prison followed by five years of post-release supervision.
