A day at the beach turned deadly along a stretch of coastline known for sudden danger.
Mahial Sran, 20, and Harshita Nair, 21, died after being swept into the Pacific Ocean in Santa Cruz County, California, according to NBC Bay Area.
The two women were from Fremont, California, and had graduated from the same high school together in 2023, SFGATE reported.
Sran was studying public health at San Jose State University. Nair was a legal studies student at the University of California, Berkeley, according to their LinkedIn bios.

Two Long Island women were killed and another critically injured when a pontoon boat flipped on Flagstaff Lake in Maine, officials announced on Saturday, Aug. 30.
Farhana Nasir, 53, of Selden, and Kiran Akbar, 23, of Lake Grove, were pronounced dead at the scene, according to Maine officials.
The crash happened around 1:30 p.m. when seven people left their dock in a 2024 18-foot Sea-Doo Switch Pontoon boat, investigators said. The group was boating near the Cathedral Pines Campground when the bow began to dip underwater.

Woman Found Dead, Boat Operator Still Missing After Niagara River Crash: Nysp
A Western New York woman was found dead in the Niagara River, and the man believed to be driving the boat that crashed is still missing, according to state police.
Troopers say Natalie Sansivero, 46, of Grand Island, was recovered from the water on Friday, July 25, about a mile from where the crash happened.
She was last seen aboard a 35-foot 2015 Scout Boat that collided in the river on Tuesday night, July 23, around 9:38 p.m., according to New York State Police.
State police said that the multi-agency effort to recover Jerome Williams' body is ongoing.

The incident occurred in Pike County in Shohola, Pennsylvania, around 12:45 p.m., Sunday, July 7, near Sullivan and Orange counties in New York.
