WalletHub released its 2026 list of Best Cities for St. Patrick's Day Celebrations on Wednesday, March 11. The study ranked 200 US cities based on holiday traditions, Irish pubs and restaurants per capita, affordability, safety, accessibility, and even the weather forecast.

Gun violence is on the decline in several Hudson Valley cities, with officials crediting a new initiative for the progress.
Governor Kathy Hochul announced on Tuesday, Sept. 16, that across the 28 municipalities participating in New York State’s Gun Involved Violence Elimination initiative, including Mount Vernon, Yonkers, and Poughkeepsie, shooting incidents with injury fell 14 percent in the first eight months of 2025 compared to the same period last year.

The band behind hits like "Jet Airliner" and "The Joker" is canceling its tour weeks before it was set to begin in the Northeast.
The Steve Miller Band announced the cancellation of its entire tour, according to a message on the group's website posted on Thursday, July 17. The "Fly Like An Eagle" performers cited dangerous weather conditions across the country.

Deadly Bacteria Risk In Fish Sold Across NY Prompts Large Recall, FDA Says
A smoked fish recall is affecting more than 70 grocery stores across New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut due to a life-threatening botulism risk, health officials said.
P. East Trading Corp., based in The Bronx, NY, issued the recall on Tuesday, June 10, the Food and Drug Administration said. State inspectors found that P. East's Salted Smoked Split Herring was uneviscerated and longer than five inches.
The long fish is a violation that increases the risk of contamination with Clostridium botulinum.

Walgreens Announces Dozens Of Upcoming Closures, Including Hudson Valley Store
Walgreens announced this past fall that it will close about 1,200 stores over three years amid a decline in prescription drug payments and a rise in online competition.
About 500 of those closures will be in 2025.

A 54-year-old Pennsylvania man has been sentenced after admitting to taking a 5-year-old girl for sex in Virginia and New York, the US Department of Justice announced on Wednesday, Sept. 25.
John Oathout, of Harrisburg, PA, was sentenced by Chief United States District Judge Brenda K. Sannes in Syracuse, NY on Friday, Sept. 20. He'll serve 25 years in federal prison followed by 20 years of supervised release, and he'll be a registered sex offender for the remainder of his life, according to the USDOJ release.

When it comes to putting down your roots, these New York locales are among the best in the nation, according to a brand-new ranking.
Four cities in the Empire State made the top 100 on U.S. News & World Report’s 2024 “Best Places to Live in the US” ranking.
