Drunk Driver Hits, Kills Pedestrian Near Long Island Middle School, Police Say

An accused drunk driver is behind bars after allegedly hitting and killing a pedestrian in a late-night crash on Long Island.

The wreck happened in Copiague, near the intersection of Great Neck Road and Malta Street, at around 11:20 p.m. Wednesday, March 5.

Mario Matute, 59, was walking on Great Neck Road when he was struck by a Hyundai SUV heading southbound, Suffolk County Police said. Matute, of Copiague, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers arrested the driver, Rand Strollo, 62, of Amityville, on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and criminal possession of a controlled substance, police said.

Anyone who witnessed the crash was asked to contact Suffolk County Police detectives at 631-852-6553.
