A Capital Region man who admitted to raping and killing a three-year-old girl has died in prison just a month after he began his 20 years to life sentence.
Rensselaer County resident Robert Fisher, age 34, of Rensselaer, died around 1:150 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 22, at the Elmira Correctional Facility in Chemung County, said Thomas Mailey of the State Department Of Corrections.
Fisher pleaded guilty in July to raping and murdering Josefina “Josie” Cunningham of Rensselaer in July 2023.

A 74-year-old North Bergen man was sentenced on Wednesday, Oct. 16, to 35 years in prison for fatally stabbing a man in 2021, authorities said.
On Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2021, Augusto Perez stabbed Omar Cruz, a 64-year-old Albany, NY resident, to death behind the Ulta Beauty store in the Bergen Town Center mall in Maywood, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Muella said.

John Oathout, of Harrisburg, PA, was sentenced by Chief United States District Judge Brenda K. Sannes in Syracuse, NY on Friday, Sept. 20. Ulster County resident Stephen E. Alvarez Jr., of Milton, was charged Tuesday, July 30, by the town of Hyde Park Police for the incident, which was reported on Friday, April 26.

A man from the region is facing sexual assault charges after reportedly forcing his way through a door to reach his alleged victim.
Saratoga County resident Anthony Collins, age 42, of Ballston Spa, was arrested Saturday, June 8, on rape and related charges.
