Grateful Dead's Founding Member Played Some Of His Last Shows Region Before Death Before his death at the age of 84, longtime Grateful Dead bassist and founding member Phil Lesh played some of the last concerts of his life at a theater in Westchester.  Lesh, who died on Friday, Oct. 25, played bass with the iconic rock band for three decades up to their disbandment in 1995. The Greene County incident happened at around 11 p.m. Wednesday, July 24, on State Route 9W in Catskill. New York State Police said Thomas Konow, age 61, of Claverack in Columbia County, was driving a GMC SUV southbound on SR 9W when the vehicle left the roadway, struck the wall of a railroad overpass, and caught fire.
