At least six homes were heavily damaged and roads were washed out following a powerful storm system that brought drenching rain and widespread flooding to parts of New York and Connecticut. On Long Island, Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine issued a state of emergency on Monday, Aug. 19, after surveying flood damage caused when up to nine inches of rain fell in parts of the county overnight. “Our longtime Mill Pond is gone. Online Tip Leads To Child Porn Arrest Of Suffolk County Man
A Long Island man has been accused of possessing child porn. The New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation began the probe based on a cyber tip generated by the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force Program. On Thursday, Aug. 15, a search warrant was executed, and Guenther Mayrhofer, age 71, of Mastic Beach, was apprehended and charged. Full Closure Set For Portion Of Sunrise Highway In Suffolk County
Upcoming road work could spell delays for Long Island drivers. In Suffolk County, the eastbound Sunrise Highway (Route 27) will close in the town of Brookhaven from 10 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, until 5 a.m. Friday, Aug. 16. The closures will take place between exit 57S and Exit 58 while crews remove an overhead sign structure, the Department of Transportation said. Prosecutors and relatives are outraged after an admitted drug dealer was allowed to dodge prison despite selling the fentanyl that killed a Long Island man. Omar Aitcheson, age 31, of North Amityville, pleaded guilty to multiple counts of criminal sale of a controlled substance in Suffolk County Court on Tuesday, Aug. 13. 'Mistaken Identity' Led To Father's Killing In Backyard Of Long Island Home, DA Says
A case of mistaken identity led to a husband and father being gunned down in the backyard of his Long Island home, prosecutors said. Oliver Schor, age 22, and Christopher Fernandez, age 28, both of Sound Beach, were formally arraigned on murder charges in Suffolk County Court on Friday, Aug. 9, in the fatal shooting of Michael Hartmann. Police recovered nearly $50,000 that was taken from a Long Island man in a scam earlier this week. An 89-year-old Melville resident called a number he found on the Internet on Wednesday, Aug. 7, at approximately 1:30 p.m. to help him with a computer password problem.
