It happened around 10 p.m. Friday, March 21, in Las Cruces near the parking lot of Young Park during a monthly gathering of car enthusiasts with about 200 attendees.
The three dead are two 19-year-old men and one 16-year-old boy, the Las Cruces Police Department said. Their names have not yet been released.
The injured range in age from 16 years to 36 years.
No arrests have been made, but the Las Cruces PD stated it is "actively following multiple leads."
Witnesses recounted a sudden escalation of tension prior to the gunfire, describing a physical altercation that preceded the shooting, with some videos of the incident posted on social media.
Eyewitness accounts suggested that at least one individual appeared to be armed with what resembled an assault-style weapon.
