A wounded cat that had been struck by a Long Island Rail Road train was rescued from the tracks in a shockingly smooth operation on Sunday, April 12. The orange cat, since named Garfield for his appearance, was first spotted by an LIRR engineer near Lindenhurst station on the Babylon Branch on Saturday, April 11, but the engineer assumed the furball was dead, WABC reported. A person was struck and killed by an LIRR train Thursday morning, May 22 on Long Island, officials confirmed. The crash happened in Amityville at approximately 5:30 a.m., according to Ray Raimundi, a spokesperson for the MTA. The westbound train was headed to the Amityville Station when the crash occurred. A Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) train struck and killed a pedestrian late Saturday night, Dec. 28 near the Mastic Shirley station, an MTA spokesperson confirmed. The incident happened at approximately 11:10 p.m. between the William Floyd Parkway crossing and the station. Both MTA and local police were dispatched to the scene. Authorities have not yet determined why the individual was on the tracks. The investigation remains ongoing, the spokesperson said. A 23-year-old Long Island man was killed after he was struck by a Long Island Railroad train. According to David Steckel with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Christopher Reitzel, of Medford, was hit by LIRR Train 64 at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 10, west of the Sayville Train station when he was on the tracks without authorization. EMS transported Reitzel to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, where he was pronounced dead, MTA said.
