'Fugitive From Justice' Wanted For Crime Spree In Region Extradited
A Hudson Valley man wanted for a slew of alleged crimes in the region has been extradited after being arrested out of state. Orange County resident Joseph Michael Flood, age 42, of Port Jervis, was returned to Sullivan County on Thursday, Nov. 7, after failing to show up in court in 2023 for a crime spree, said Sullivan County Undersheriff Eric Chaboty. Chaboty said Flood was picked up from the Morris County Jail in New Jersey and returned after being arrested by the New Jersey State Police. Threat To School In Region Leads To Arrest
One person has been charged in connection with an alleged threat of a shooting at a school in the region after an online post was brought to the attention of police by the public. The incident occurred in Sullivan County on Saturday, Sept. 21, in Fallsburg. According to the Fallsburg Police Department, an arrest was made concerning the threat on Snapchat. Trio Nabbed For Welfare Fraud In Region, Officials Say
Three residents in the region have been charged with alleged welfare fraud following an investigation by the Sullivan County Welfare Fraud Task Force. Those arrested included: Jacqueline M. Vargas, age 39, of Liberty, was arrested on Sunday July 23 and charged with welfare fraud and offering a false instrument for filing. Vargas allegedly stole $1,435 in SNAP benefits from the Sullivan County Department of Social Services by failing to a second source of income from a second job between June 2022, and Dec. 2022. Man From Region Charged With Rape Of Minor
A 41-year-old man from the region has been charged with the alleged rape of a minor. Sullivan County resident Phillip C. Calyer, of Fallsburg, was arrested on Thursday, Sept. 7 following an investigation by the New York State Police. According to Trooper Steven Nevel, Calyer was charged following a joint investigation with the Sullivan County Child Protective Services. Rabid Cat: Residents In Region Being Treated After Being In Contact With Infected Animal
An undisclosed number of people in the region are being treated for rabies after being in contact with a rabid cat. The Sullivan County Department of Public Health has confirmed that a stray cat euthanized in the South Fallsburg area tested positive for the rabies virus. "Exposed persons are currently receiving appropriate treatment," the department said. Man Nabbed In Stolen Car With Gun, Drugs In Region
This story has been updated. A 22-year-old man from the region is behind bars on a slew of charges including the unauthorized use of a vehicle he allegedly stole. Sullivan County resident March Santiago, of Roscoe, was recently arrested while the town of Fallsburg Police was conducting seatbelt enforcement and stopped him in a 2013 Toyota Camry on Route 42 in South Fallsburg, said Fallsburg Police Chief Simmie Williams.
