'Total Shock': 34-Year-Old Air Force Veteran Killed In Capital Region Crash Had 'Heart Of Gold' Tributes are pouring in for a beloved Air Force veteran following his untimely death in the region. Albany County resident Michael Furch, age 34, of Guilderland, died following a single-vehicle crash on I-787 in Albany on Thursday, June 20. New York State Police said Furch was operating a motorcycle when he lost control and struck a concrete barrier while exiting I-787 on the flyover ramp to I-90. Tornado Touched Down In NY For Only Second Time Ever In February: Here's Where A tornado touched down in New York during a potent storm packed with damaging gusty winds accompanying a cold front last week, the National Weather Service has announced. A damage survey determined the timing to be around 5:20 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28 in Broome County about 10 miles north of Binghamton in the hamlet of Castle Creek. It had an estimated maximum wind speed of 100 miles per hour. The tornado tracked 0.61 miles, with a width of 150 yards. Strongest Tornado In Eastern US This Week Among 6 Confirmed Twisters In NY A total of six tornadoes have been confirmed in New York State this week, accounting for 40 percent of the twisters in the Eastern US during separate rounds of storms on Monday, Aug. 7 and Tuesday, Aug. 8. Though five of those six were characterized as being "weak" on the Enhanced Fujita scale, there was one twister rated as "strong," according to the National Weather Service. It touched down in northern New York in Lewis County, about 35 miles south of Watertown, and traveled 16 miles.
