A man who was driving drunk on the Long Island Expressway slammed into a police cruiser and then another vehicle involved in an earlier crash overnight, according to authorities. The incident happened just before 3:45 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, in Ronkonkoma. Jose Martin Abeu Jr., age 28, of Brentwood, was driving a 2020 Honda sedan on the eastbound near Exit 58, when he crashed his vehicle into the rear of the stopped police vehicle that had been directing traffic after a prior crash, and then into a 2008 Ford F150 that was involved in the original crash. A woman accused of robbing a Long Island bank was arrested after she crashed head-on with a police officer in a stolen car a day after the heist, authorities said. A stretch of the Long Island Expressway is scheduled to be closed for roadwork. The New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) is advising motorists of weeknight closures on I-495 in the town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, weather permitting, beginning Tuesday, Sept. 3, for approximately 10 weeks to facilitate concrete pavement repairs: Eastbound between Exits 64 (Route 112) and Exit 67 (Yaphank Road/Suffolk Route 21), two lanes will be closed from 8 p.m. until 10 p.m. All lanes will be closed and detoured onto the South Service Road from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. Two lanes will be clos…

Extended Closures Planned For Portion Of Long Island Expressway
Extended lane closures on the Long Island Expressway could spell delays for drivers in the coming months. In the town of Brookhaven, two lanes of westbound I-495 will close nightly between Exit 64 and Exit 67 from 8 p.m. until 10 p.m. before all westbound lanes close until 5 a.m., the Department of Transportation said. One driver was killed and another was injured in a two-vehicle crash on an exit ramp from the Long Island Expressway. The deadly wreck happened at around 7 a.m. Friday, May 31, in Calverton, on the eastbound I-495 exit 71 ramp to Edwards Avenue.
