The news was first reported by Politico and later confirmed by Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Suri's lawyer filed a suit fighting for his release, obtained by Politico. He was reportedly arrested by masked DHS agents Monday night, March 17, saying his visa had been revoked.
“Suri was a foreign exchange student at Georgetown University actively spreading Hamas propaganda and promoting antisemitism on social media,” McLaughlin said in a statement.
Suri has close connections to a known or suspected terrorist who serves as a senior advisor to Hamas, the U.S.-designated terrorist organization responsible for attacks against Israel and others, according to McLaughlin.
"Suri has close connections to a known or suspected terrorist, who is a senior advisor to Hamas," McLaughlin said. "The Secretary of State issued a determination on March 15, 2025 that Suri’s activities and presence in the United States rendered him deportable under INA section 237(a)(4)(C)(i)."
In a statement to NBC News, a Georgetown spokesperson said "We are not aware of him engaging in any illegal activity, and we have not received a reason for his detention.
"We support our community members’ rights to free and open inquiry, deliberation and debate, even if the underlying ideas may be difficult, controversial or objectionable," the university said. "We expect the legal system to adjudicate this case fairly.”
Suri is reportedly an Indian national. His LinkedIn page shows he has his Ph.D. in peace and conflict studies and is a post-doc fellow at Georgetown.
Daily Voice has reached out to Suri's attorney, Hassan Ahmad, and Georgetown for comment.
