'Cowardly Crime': Face Slashing, Porch Shooting Nets Capital Region Ex-Con Decades In Prison
An ex-convict from the region is going back to prison for shooting a woman through her window and slashing a second victim in the face. Raheem Hines, age 46, of Albany, was sentenced to 25 years behind bars in Albany County Court on Friday, Jan. 12, after pleading guilty to attempted murder and related charges. According to prosecutors, Hines admitted to slashing a woman in the face on Central Avenue in Albany in August 2021. The attack left the victim with serious injuries. More than a year after a young postal worker was shot to death in the region, his killer is heading to prison. Laquan Fallen, age 24, of Albany, was sentenced to between five and 15 years in prison in Albany County Supreme Court on Friday, Dec. 1. Capital Region Man Sexually Abused Child For Years, Jury Finds
A 29-year-old man from the region is facing decades in prison after being convicted of sexually abusing a young child for years. Douglas Eckler, of Cohoes, was found guilty of sex crimes by a jury in Albany County Supreme Court on Wednesday, Oct. 18. According to prosecutors, Eckler repeatedly sexually abused the victim for several years, between the spring of 2020 and February 2023. The abuse started when the victim was under the age of 13. A 35-year-old man accused of trying to gun down two people during separate robberies in the region could spend the rest of his life in prison. Demetries Smith, of Albany, was convicted of all charges in a seven-count indictment, including first-degree attempted murder, by an Albany County Supreme Court jury on Monday, Feb. 27. A 20-year-old convicted murderer will spend decades in prison for fatally shooting a young woman outside of a home in the region. Jahmere Manning, of Albany, was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison in Albany County Supreme Court on Friday, Dec. 9. A man from the region accused of sexually abusing a young child has formally answered to the charges against him. Albany County resident John Ferrara, age 54, of Fuera Bush, pleaded not guilty to a felony count of predatory sexual assault of a child in Albany County Supreme Court Monday, Oct. 24. Prosecutors said between February 2016 and June 2018, Ferrara engaged in sexual conduct against a girl who was between the ages of 5 and 8 at the time.
