Virginia Wittenberg told troopers in July that someone had stolen her identity and opened a credit card account in her name and she was being asked to pay the past due account, said Trooper Melissa McMorris.

An investigation into the matter determined that her claim was false and the account belonged to Wittenberg, McMorris said.

She was charged with offering a false instrument for filing and issued an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Dover court on Jan. 5.
