The 40-year-old Queens man entered the walkway around 10 p.m., disregarding the instructions of a security guard who told him it was off limits, authority spokesman Steve Coleman said this afternoon.
The guard notified the GWB communications center and Port Authority Police Officer Jesse Turano immediately responded to the area of the New York tower.
After speaking with the guard, Turano spotted the man and activated his patrol cruiser’s emergency lights — but he kept walking, Coleman said.
Turano got out and began chasing the man, who suddenly “grabbed the outer railing of the bridge and tried to jump,” Coleman said.
Turano grabbed him around the waist “while the man was airborne,” pulled him back and handcuffed him, he said.
The man was taken to Bergen Regional Medical Center for evaluation.
Turano has been in on other rescues — including helping to talk a suicidal woman off the bridge last June.
