The crash occurred around 9 a.m. Tuesday after the unidentified driver of a 2007 Honda Accord traveling westbound on Shunpike Road near Kennels Road lost control of the vehicle, said Capt. John Watterson, of the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office.

After losing control, the vehicle crossed over the center pavement markings and struck a tree on the northern shoulder. The driver, who was wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene and identification is being withheld pending the notification of the next of kin, Watterson said.

The investigation is ongoing however at this time unsafe speed appears to be the primary factor in the crash, he added.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Dutchess County Medical Examiner’s Office, Northern Dutchess Paramedics, and the Millbrook Fire Department.
