Paramedics using a defibrillator restored a pulse after an NYPD Harbor Unit pulled the Asian woman from the Hudson River near the West 79th Street boat basin, five miles or so from the bridge, the Port Authority’s Joseph Pentangelo told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
She was pronounced dead at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center shortly before 5:30 p.m.
Authorities told CLIFFVIEW PILOT that the woman flew to O’Hare International Airport in Chicago this morning and then to New York City, arriving at LaGuardia Airport around 1 p.m.
Just before 4 p.m., a passerby alerted Port Authority police officers that a woman had left a jacket and a purse on the south walkway. In the bag were valuables and personal items.
A U.S. Coast Guard member spotted the body in the water about 45 minutes later.
Nj.com identified the woman and said that she apparently had recently been diagnosed with brain cancer, according to a friend.
It was the 7th GWB suicide this year (one every 17.7 days).
Eighteen people jumped to their deaths from the span last year (one every 20 days). There were also 74 “interventions” last year in which Port Authority police talked someone down or away from the ledge.
