It’s not as rare an occurence as you might think. Defibrillators from subway stations are sold on the black market.
A subway maintenance worker in Washington, D.C. last year was arrested and charged with selling 13 stolen defribrillators worth a combined $18,000 for $300 each.
They’ve also been stolen from churches, ambulances — even hospitals.
This time, Port Authority got a call of someone stealing the defibrillators for commuters at the 23rd Street PATH station.
Moments later they arrested 20-year-old Michael Howard of Newark as he boarded a PATH train at the 33rd Street station — carrying the device, the authority’s Joseph Pentangelo said.
He fought back, flailing his arms, but was quickly subdued and later charged with grand larceny and possession of stolen property, Pentangelo said.
Thursday’s arrest came nearly a month to the day that Howard was arrested on Market Street in Newark on Dec. 17 for snatching a defibrillator from Penn Station, he said.
