A witness told police he was talking to the woman shortly after 6 p.m. when she “said something to the effect that she was going to take her life,” the authority’s Joseph Pentangelo told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
He kept her talking, though, Pentangelo said.
Meanwhile a passing motorist dialed 911.
Officers Stephen Gryboski, a 13-year department veteran, and Mario Garcia, a nine-year vet, rushed to the spot.
The 5-foot-9-inch woman had her back to them as they approached the 6-inch ledge, Pentangelo said.
“She was right on the ledge, poised to jump,” he said.
One officer grabbed her in a bear hug, pinning her to the railing, while they other got hold of her legs and flipped her back onto the south walkway, Pentangelo said.
She was brought to Bergen Regional Medical Center.
There hasn’t been a confirmed suicide from the bridge since November, Pentangelo noted.
