Sheriff Leo McGuire today announced the arrest of Jamel Dixon, who is accused of aggravated assault on a police officer, among other charges.
A staff member at the facility alerted a sheriff’s officer on Monday that Dixon had just handed over bogus ID, McGuire said. Dixon then snatched it back and bolted, hopping into a gray Range Rover, with the [unidentified] officer close behind.
“The vehicle struck the officer while exiting the parking lot onto Route 17 South,” the sheriff said, noting that it later crossed the George Washington Bridge.
It was within a half-mile of the bridge that investigators found him yesterday. He took off but was quickly corralled at 173rd and Hoe streets.
As it turns out, Dixon, who turned 27 on Saturday, was also wanted on a fugitive warrant out of Massachusetts for drug trafficking, the sheriff said. He’s being held without bail pending extradition to New Jersey.
McGuire thanked the NYPD Anti-Crime Unit, under the direction of city Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly.
“This arrest was the result of swift and efficient work by the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office and the New York Police Department,” McGuire said. “Every day our officers risk injury to themselves to keep the residents of this county safe. To those who would do them harm I would simply say: ‘Justice is coming for you’.”
