MILLBROOK, N.Y. -- Evelyn A. Scanlon, a Millbrook resident and formerly a longtime resident of Valley Stream, died Monday, Jan. 25. She was 82.
Scanlon was a dedicated career RN and spent many years caring for others. She started working as a public health nurse in the Long Island area, later at the A. Holly Paterson nursing home. She finally was a school nurse with the Holy Name of Mary School in Valley Stream, as well as in the Valley Stream School District No. 24, until she retired in the late 1990s.
She enjoyed traveling with her husband and family to the Lakes region of New Hampshire, Shelter Island, and the National Parks of the western United States and Alaska. In retirement, she enjoyed her house on Lake Winnepesaukie, as well as the mountains of New Hampshire, with her husband.
Scanlon was a member of the Grace Methodist Church of Valley Stream during her time there.
She is survived by her son Michael of Snowmass Village, Colo., and his wife Kathleen of North Reading, Mass.; daughter Kathleen and her husband Patrick of Poughkeepsie; and grandchildren Ryan, Daniel, Kerri, Patrick, Colleen and Erin.
Scanlon was predeceased by her husband, Donald Scanlo; and her parents, Charles and Anna Gordon.
Visiting hours are from 2-6 p.m., with a service at 5 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 30, at the Timothy Doyle Funeral Home, 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie.
