Amenia Proposes Composting Site Near Water Source Off Route 22

AMENIA, N.Y. -- A landscaping firm has applied for a controversial zoning change in order to build a solid waste composting operation off of Route 22 in Amenia, according to the Millbrook Independent.

The Town of Amenia has applied to build a composting site on top of the aquifer that supplies water to the area.

The composting operation would sit on top of a primary aquifer that the town is obligated to protect under its own codes, The Millbrook Independent reported.

The current zoning law states that solid waste composting operations are prohibited in the town, but Bulfalmante, the company who applice for the change claims it can protect the aquifer by putting down a pad of concrete pavement, The Millbrook Independent said.
