High Winds Wreak Havoc In NJ Leaving Roads Closed, Hundreds Without Power Wind gusts up to 50 mph were wreaking havoc across New Jersey on Friday, Aug. 9. As of 2:30 p.m., thousands of residents were without power and multiple roadways were closed due to downed wires and related crashes. Driver Killed In Route 49 Crash In South Jersey (Update) A 72-year-old driver from Florida was killed in a crash along Route 49 in Atlantic County, authorities said. Troopers responded to the crash at about 8 a.m. on Wednesday, July 31, on Route 49 West at milepost 49 in Estell Manor, according to New Jersey State Police spokesman Sgt. Charles Marchan. Based on a preliminary investigation, Mark Jones of Cape Coral, FL, was driving a Ford Escape when it traveled off the road and struck a tree, Marchan said. The "Tea time Hill" wildfire had not been contained at all as of 3 p.m., the New Jersey Forest Fire Service said.
