A Margate doctor will spend more than a year in prison for his role in a $5 million prescription kickback scheme, authorities said. Brian Sokalsky, 46, was sentenced on Tuesday, Oct. 29 to a year and three months in prison, said Vikas Khanna, First Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey, in a news release. Sokalsky previously pleaded guilty to conspiring to commit healthcare fraud by prescribing compound medications. Sokalsky was a doctor at Jersey Shore Sports Medicine. A Cumberland County man was accused of driving while high on drugs when he crashed his car into two poles in Margate, authorities said. Criminal charges were pending for 37-year-old Joseph Shea of Bridgeton, the Margate City Police Department said in a news release on Thursday, Aug. 1. Bystanders and employees at nearby businesses were praised for helping the two victims of a fiery crash in Atlantic County, authorities said. Egg Harbor Township police responded to the crash near 2511 Fire Road at around 9:37 a.m. on Wednesday, July 10, the department said in a news release. The crash was in front of the Bellevue Commons business complex. You might want to check your credit card statement if you recently took a popular bridge to get to Margate. In a Facebook post, the Downbeach Express said it double-charged some customers on Thursday, June 27.
