Irvington Man, Garfield Woman Busted for Having Sex In Public: Newark PD A 44-year-old Garfield woman and a 39-year-old Irvington man were recently arrested for having sex in public multiple times in Newark, authorities said. Melissa Barrett and Christopher Turner were arrested following multiple acts of lewdness that occurred between February 2024 and August 2024, Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé said. On Sunday, Feb. 24, at 8:30 a.m., two juveniles reported they observed a man and woman having sex in public on the 200 block of Ferry Street, Fragé said. Shots Fired In Newark, Two Firearms Recovered: Police Gunshots were fired in Newark on the evening of Wednesday, Aug. 14, authorities said. At 8:21 p.m., police responded to the 100 block of Clifton Avenue on a report of shots fired, Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé said. While police did not locate any victims, they did recover two firearms in the immediate area, Fragé said. This incident remains under investigation, Fragé said.

Man Shot In Newark: Police A man was shot in Newark on the afternoon of Sunday May 26, authorities said. At 1 p.m., police responded to Irvine Turner Boulevard and Marie Place and found a man who had been shot, Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé said. He was transported to University Hospital and is in stable condition, Fragé said. The shooting remains under investigation, Fragé said.

Shots Fired Near Two Newark Schools: Police Gunshots were fired near Newark schools on the afternoon of Monday, May 20, authorities said. At 3:35 p.m., police responded to South 11th Street and South Orange Avenue on a report of shots fired, Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé said. KIPP Rise Academy, a charter school for students from 5th grade to 8th grade, and West Side High School are located minutes from the shooting location.  Police did not locate any gunshot victims, Fragé said. The investigation is ongoing, Fragé said.
