Inmate Charged With Murder For Stabbing Fellow Prisoner Dead At Essex County Jail: Prosecutor
A prisoner at the Essex County Jail was charged with murder for the stabbing death of another inmate, authorities announced. Ashton D. Barthelus, 26, of Carteret, stabbed Dan G. Milford Gelin, 27, of Elizabeth, at the correctional facility last week, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II, said. Gelin on Dec. 3 was rushed from the jail on the 300 block of Doremus Avenue to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead around 9 a.m., officials said. Two men with lengthy arrest records have been arrested in connection with two armed robberies -- one in Livingston and another in West Orange, local police said. Shyhiem Clark, 24, of Newark, and Tyrese Thompson, 22, of Elizabeth, were charged in connection with the Sept. 27 incident at a Mount Pleasant Avenue store, according to police in West Orange. The two are believed to be linked to a second robbery in Livingston on Oct. 4, authorities said. Two burglars who tried to blend in as home-repair contractors in Lyndhurst were arrested following a police pursuit that ended when they crashed a stolen commercial truck in Newark, authorities said. An 18-year-old North Jersey man lost his leg after authorities said his drunk twin brother drove into a tree with him on the hood of the car, his sister said. Union County Jail Closing, Transferring Inmates To Essex In Move To Save $103M
The Union County Jail will be closing its Elizabeth facility and transferring its inmates to the Essex County Jail in Newark -- saving the county more than $103 million. Effective July 1, inmate housing will cease and the Elizabeth facility will begin operating only a hub to intake, process, temporarily detain and transport prisoners to the Essex County Jail.
