Children Tossed From Fire Escape Into Hackensack Heroes' Arms Hackensack firefighters caught two children tossed to them by their parents during an overnight apartment building blaze. The city's bravest arrived at the four-story brick building on Prospect Avenue shortly after 12:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 26, to find several residents on the fire escapes trying to flee the second-floor blaze. Other children, as well as adults, were rescued safely after two youngsters were dropped to the firefighters from the escapes. No injuries were reported, fire officials said. Companies opened an exterior wall and section of roof to extinguish the cockloft flames at the South River Street eatery shortly before 11:30 p.m. Sunday. They had the fire under control within 45 minutes. No injuries were reported. Car Fire Jams Route 4 A car fire temporarily closed eastbound Route 4 in Englewood. Flames quickly engulfed the sedan in front of the BP station just after the Sterling Boulevard entrance to the highway, sending plumes of black smoke skyward, shortly after 2:30 p.m. Englewood firefighters doused the blaze while eastbound Route 4 remained closed at Webster Avenue.  Traffic quickly backed up toward Hackensack while rubberneckers slowed the flow on the westbound side. Fire Breaks Out In North Jersey Hotel Firefighters in Englewood responded to a two-alarm fire at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, according to officials. The fire broke out shortly before 3:00 a.m. on Dec. 7 in an unoccupied room on the 5th floor of the hotel, the Englewood Fire Department suspects it may have been caused by an electric HVAC unit in the room. The fire was brought under control about half an hour later, the rooms below on the 4th, 3rd, and 2nd floors sustained water damage. Nobody was injured.

Heroes: Englewood Police Officer, Firefighter Rescue Trapped Residents In Overnight Blaze Englewood Police Officer John McConnell heard cries for help from inside a house that was being ravaged by flames before dawn Sunday. Unable to open the door of the Green Street home, McConnell improvised. He grabbed a cinderblock and smashed his way in, then battled thick smoke to get two trapped victims to safety. As he did that, city Firefighter Brian Comitto grabbed a portable ladder and rescued a third victim who was at second-floor window. Traffic was jammed for miles after two trucks and an SUV collided around 10 a.m. in front of the Vivian. There was no immediate word on injuries. Fire Ravages Clutter-Filled Teaneck Home Flames roared through the upper-floor windows of a Teaneck home that responders said was filled with clutter. No injuries were reported in the two-alarm Beverly Road blaze, which broke out around 10:30 p.m. Friday amid what responders said were hoarding conditions. Hackensack and Englewood firefighters joined their Teaneck colleagues at the scene, while those from Bergenfield, Bogota and Ridgefield Park covered the township.
