A tractor-trailer hauling garbage tipped over a median on Route 17 Friday morning at what police and commuters say has become an all-too-frequent site for such crashes near the New York State border. The driver was initially entrapped but climbed out on his own after his northbound rig went over the divider near the Route 202 exit at Mountainside Avenue at 8:43 a.m. Sept. 8, Mahwah Police Chief Timothy O'Hara said. UPDATE: Northbound Route 17 in Mahwah was reopened around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday following a wild tractor-trailer crash earlier in the day. Only one lane of the southbound highway was open during the evening rush. There miraculously were no serious injuries in the crash, which left the rig scattered across both sides of the highway near the New York State border around 10 a.m. Aug. 2, Mahwah Mayor Jim Wysocki said. The driver of a van that crashed on a Route 46 overpass on Wednesday was taken to the hospital in police custody, authorities said. Frankie Harrison, 63, was charged with DWI and careless driving after the 11:45 a.m. June 7 rollover on the westbound highway near the exit ramp for southbound Route 17, Hasbrouck Heights Police Lt. A notorious stretch of Bergen County blacktop claimed not one but two more casualties when a pair of tractor-trailers jackknifed as the morning rush began.
