If only he’d try out for “American Idol,” or a remake of “This Is Spinal Tap”:
That performance, videotaped two years ago, surfaced on YouTube last week and immediately skyrocketed under the title, “This Drummer Is At The Wrong Gig.”
“I’m sort of like a blind discus thrower at the Olympics,” Moore told an interviewer. “I may not win any awards, but I’ll sure keep the crowd alert.”
He’s not even the star of the show. Rick K. and the All Nighters are a cheesy, Vegas-styled lounge act — right down to the gold lamé (or is it lame gold?) jackets — who bill themselves as “America’s Most Exciting Show Band.” Their near-ridiculous list of diverse influences include KC & The Sunshine Band, Bob Seger, The Four Tops, Temptations, Maroon 5, Michael Buble, ZZ Top.
They’re currently barnstorming the Midwest, playing “fairs, festivals, casinos and corporate events around the country,” with fewer off-nights than Major League Baseball teams.
Still, Moore — a native of West Virginia — brings it every night. Of all his videos, this might be the funniest:
“People want to see something at a show,” Moore said in the interview with the blog sacurrent.com. “If that were not the case, national artists would save millions on staging, lights, pyro, props, fog machines…all of which, have nothing to do with “music.” However, it has everything to do with a “show.”
He’s done endorsements for major companies, including Ludwig, and even has his own signature drumstick. Yet the greatest thrill for Moore, so far, was hearing that Dream Theatre drummer Mike Portnoy enjoys his playing.
“Portnoy is the best progressive drummer alive today. I own everything he’s ever recorded. It’s not easy to grab the attention of a high-profile player like that. As it turns out, he’s not just a monster player, but a very nice guy as well. Too many times your heroes disappoint you. I don’t care how long I’ve been playing drums, it’s still hard not to geek out a little over Mike Portnoy!”
Somewhere, Chris Farley is laughing his ass off.
