His name is Jahmell Crockam and he is considered extremely dangerous. He also is wanted on a warrant for weapons possession, which may account for the shooting, CLIFFVIEW PILOT has learned.

Officer Christopher Matlosz, 27, of Toms River, was shot three times during a routine stop in a residential neighborhood around 4 o’clock Friday afternoon, said a ranking law enforcement officer from North Jersey who is familiar with the case.

The four-year veteran of the Ocean County department was taken to Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune, where he was pronounced dead about a half-hour later.

A SWAT team and a mini-army of officers converged on the area, but couldn’t find the shooter. Fortunately, several witnesses were able to provide reliable information, the police official said.

Matlosz, who was engaged to be married, previously worked for the Englishtown Police Department. He grew up in Monmouth County, just north of Ocean, and was graduated from Howell High School and Brookdale Community College.

The New Jersey State Policemen’s Benevolent Association announced a $40,000 reward for information leading to the killer’s arrest and conviction.

Crockham, 29, is 5’9 and 220 pounds — heavyset, with sunken eyes and puffy cheeks. If you see him, or know where to find him, DO NOT approach him yourself. Dial 911 immediately.
