Volunteer Re-enactors Bring Civil War Camp To Life In Hewitt

HEWITT, N.J. -- Civil War history comes to life during the first weekend of October at the Long Pond Ironworks Museum in West Milford's Hewitt community.

Volunteers will re-enact a Civil War encampment Oct. 1 and Oct. 2 at the Long Pond Ironworks Museum grounds in West Milford's Hewitt.

In cooperation with the 6th New Hampshire Volunteers, the Civil War Weekend features live presentations, camp tours, military drills and demonstrations depicting a Civil War soldier's life. It all takes place from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2.

The 6th New Hampshire Volunteers is one of the only regiments to fight in all theaters of the Civil War and return with its original regimental colors, organizers said. Re-enactors will set up a Union camp for the weekend to provide an authentic view of life during the Civil War.

A donation of $5 for adults and $1 for children is requested. Proceeds will go to the restoration of the Long Pond Ironworks. For more on Long Pond Ironworks, visit its website.
