Sydnie M. Haines, of Blackwood, NJ, was heading east in the westbound lanes of Route 17 in Chester, NY, when she crashed head-on into a 2014 Honda Odyssey around 1:50 a.m. Wednesday, March 5, New York State Police said. Both Haines and the Odyssey’s driver, 54-year-old Mordichy Zafir of Kiamesha Lake, were killed in the collision, authorities said.
Records show that just three days earlier, on March 2, Haines was cited in Southampton Township for careless driving—deemed likely to endanger another person or property—and for driving or parking an unregistered motor vehicle.
Daily Voice has reached out to New Jersey State Police, who have jurisdiction over Southampton Township, for further details regarding Haines’ March 2 citations.
According to the Monsey Scoop, Zafir was on his way back from a wedding with his son when their vehicle was struck. Little information was released after Zafir, a rabbi, who does not appear to have a social footprint.
Footage of his funeral is below.
A GoFundMe for Sydnie Haines' family had raised $2,400 as of press time, as loved ones remembered her for her spontaneity, warmth, and infectious smile.
"Sydnie was a beautiful young woman—passionate, strong-willed, and deeply loved by her family and friends," the fundraiser reads.
A Rutgers University graduate, Sydnie earned a bachelor’s degree in childhood studies with a minor in psychology, the campaign says. She had a knack for making friends wherever she went—from her coworkers at Chick-fil-A to her time as a Disney student, and even during her most spontaneous adventures, it continues.
“Sydnie will forever be our Sydnie,” her loved ones wrote. “With that contagious smile and iconic dimple, she left a lasting impression on everyone she met. We appreciate all condolences from those fortunate enough to have known her. We love you, Syd—you will forever be missed.”
The fundraiser encourages those wishing to send their condolences to reach out to the Dare/Smith families here.
