Firefighters had contained a 510-acre wildfire at Wharton State Forest in Burlington and Camden counties early Thursday, April 25, authorities said. The fire had burned along Jackson Road in Shamong and Waterford townships, according to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service. Jackson Road reopened at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24. Forest Fire Service staff will remain on scene and continue to monitor control lines and address areas of concern until significant precipitation occurs to ensure public safety, they said. Firefighters were working to contain a 300-acre wildfire burning at Wharton State Forest in Burlington and Camden counties on Wednesday, April 24, authorities said. The fire was about 40 percent contained along Jackson Road in Shamong, according to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service as of 3 p.m. The Forest Fire Service has responded to the wildfire with ground crews and an observation helicopter. A search involving multiple law enforcement agencies is under way for a 32-year-old transgender man has been suspended, officials said. A spokesman for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection said the search for Northfield resident Elliot Ganiel was halted Tuesday, March 5 at 5 p.m. He did not say why. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection is developing a digital visitors vehicle map that can be used to navigate the 124,350-acre Wharton State Forest. The state DEP is seeking public comments on the proposed map through March 9 by clicking here or here. Action News has released the names of the pilot and team photographer killed in a helicopter crash Tuesday night, Dec. 19 in New Jersey. Monroe Smith, 67, of Glenside, PA, was the pilot, and Christopher Dougherty, 45, of Oreland, PA, was the photographer, according to the news station. Skeletal remains found in Waterford Township were identified as Cherry Hill missing person Peter Myers, authorities said. Myers, 68, was reported missing to the Cherry Hill Police Department by family members on June 7. On Tuesday, Oct. 4, a man hunting in a remote section of Wharton State Forest saw what appeared to be human skeletal remains and contacted the Waterford Township Police Department, local police said.
