A civilian shot and killed by an Elizabeth police officer responding to a domestic dispute this past weekend had a knife, authorities said.
Estiben Alegria-Hurtado, 42, of Elizabeth, was shot within a minute of the arrival of city police responding to a call of an "unwanted individual" on Amity Street shortly before 8 a.m. Saturday, July 29, a release from the office of New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin on Wednesday says.

Missing Carlstadt Man Found
A hearing-impaired Carlstadt man who’d gone missing nearly two weeks ago was found at University Hospital in Newark, authorities confirmed.
Carlstadt detectives found James Dugan II on Tuesday, Feb. 8, while checking area hospitals, Deputy Police Chief Thomas Cox said Wednesday.

A Newark man who’d just stabbed a woman was justifiably shot and killed by an Orange police officer after he charged at police with the knife, a grand jury found.
Jamahl Smith, 46, refused repeated commands by responding officers to drop the knife on the third floor of the Oakwood Towers on Oakwood Avenue around 3 p.m. June 13, 2019, Acting New Jersey Attorney General Andrew J. Bruck said Wednesday.
Instead, he “continued to advance toward the officers,” Bruck said.

NJ Correctional Employees Indicted In Beating Of Federal Detainee Who Squirted Liquid At Them
Four Essex County correctional employees were indicted by a grand jury on civil rights charges in the beating last summer of a federal detainee.
The indictment returned in Newark charges Officer Damion James, 41, with assaulting the pretrial detainee at the Essex County Correctional Facility, Acting U.S. Attorney Rachael A. Honig said.
Sgt. Herman Pride, 51, Sgt. Jennifer Whitley, 38, and Lt. Nicholas Palma, 46, were all charged in the indictment with failing to intervene to stop the Aug. 17, 2020 assault, she said, adding that Whitley also was charged with submitting a false report. …

A 21-year-old Newark woman was shot and killed while protecting her friend in an incident of domestic violence, news reports say.
Wesley Jean-Marie, of Valley Stream, New York, has been charged in the shooting death of Leeana Cottle, 21, of Newark, late Tuesday, according to Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II, and Newark Public Safety Director Brian A. O’Hara.
Cottle allegedly was shot at about 11:30 p.m. on the 200 block of South 10th Street while attempting to shield her friend from 32-year-old Jean-Marie, RLS Media reports.

The detainee – who was being held pending a federal trial -- squirted a mixture of urine, yogurt, and milk onto a correctional officer at the Essex County Correctional Facility (ECCF) the evening of Aug. 17, 2020, Acting U.S. Attorney Rachael A. Honig said Friday.
